Twenty-one South Carolina leaders have been selected for Liberty Fellowship’s Class of 2027. Since 2003, the network of more than 350 principled leaders has collaborated across differences to realize South Carolina’s greatest opportunities and meet its greatest challenges.

Over an intensive 18-month period, these industry and civic leaders will explore various ways to improve South Carolina. Each Liberty Fellow will bring a unique perspective and will engage in civil discourse to form actionable strategies that find common ground and decrease division.

Thomas H. Anderson

Coastal Division President, SouthState Bank

Charleston

Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Thomas H. Anderson has dedicated his career to the place he grew up and calls home. As the Coastal Division President of SouthState Bank, Thomas leads and is responsible for a $3.7 billion deposit franchise and a $2.7 billion loan book across 26 branches. He’s shown his care for the Charleston community, and the state of South Carolina through not only his professional leadership, but also through civic engagement.

With a career marked by a steadfast commitment to professional excellence and public service, Thomas has spent nearly two decades helping members of his community become homeowners, build equity, start businesses, and gain financial independence. His engagement in the community includes leadership on the executive committee of the South Carolina Loan Fund and the Charleston Regional Development Alliance.

Brook Andrews

Partner, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, LLP

Columbia

A native South Carolinian, Brook Andrews has built his career around the rule of law, public service, and the belief that strong institutions matter to the future of South Carolina. Brook is a partner at Nelson Mullins in Columbia, where he leads a national practice helping clients navigate complex litigation, investigations, and government enforcement matters. He joined the firm after nearly 15 years with the U.S. Department of Justice, including service as Acting United States Attorney, First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Deputy Criminal Chief, and Ethics Advisor for the District of South Carolina.

During his time in public service, Brook helped lead some of the state’s most significant law enforcement matters, including cases involving public corruption, civil rights, human trafficking, violent crime, and fraud. He has long given back to his community through his commitment to shaping the next generation of South Carolina attorneys. As an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law, he’s trained students in the art of courtroom advocacy since 2018.

Brook also serves his community as an elder at Downtown Church and as a board member of Transitions Homeless Center. He lives in Columbia with his wife Kim and their three children.

Meghan Barp

President and CEO, United Way of Greenville County

Greenville

Based in Greenville, South Carolina, Meghan Barp is a nonprofit leader with nearly three decades of experience focused on long-term, systemic change in her community. A graduate of the University of Nebraska and Oregon State University, Meghan has served as President and CEO of United Way of Greenville County since 2018 and has dedicated her career to serving her community’s most vulnerable populations, including nearly a decade in both Minneapolis, Minnesota, and New York City.

She currently serves as president of International Women’s Forum Carolinas and is on the board of directors for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, working to strengthen the region’s economic vitality and quality of life. Her strategic vision has earned her widespread recognition for improving lives across the state.

Josh Bell

President, Beemok Education

Charleston

As student body president of Clemson University, Josh Bell knew he had found his calling in leadership in service of others. After graduating, his first job was leading a classroom with Teach for America, and that work eventually led him to launch Teach for America – South Carolina, where he recruited and developed hundreds of teachers to serve in high-needs communities across the state.

Josh now leads Beemok Education, a portfolio of three education organizations – Meeting Street Schools, Meeting Street Scholarship Fund and the Excellence in Teaching Awards – that provide educational opportunities for under-resourced students. At the heart of his work is a long-term vision of helping create generational change in the state’s educational landscape.

 Katherine “Peanut” Belk

Operations Manager, Wild Hope Farm

Chester

As a farmer in rural Chester, South Carolina, Katherine “Peanut” Belk knows firsthand the importance of good soil. With the guiding truth that good soil makes for good food, Katherine and her family have provided farm -fresh food to their community since starting Wild Hope Farm in 2017.

For nearly a decade, Katherine has managed a diversified USDA -certified organic farm producing vegetables, flowers, and herbs for a 450 member CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), farmers markets, and wholesale. Through her leadership, she represents the vital role of rural farmers in South Carolina’s economy and has a passion for sustainable agriculture and long -term environmental stewardship.

Adair Ford Boroughs

Visiting Assistant Professor of Law, University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law

Columbia

Hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, Adair Boroughs is a seasoned litigator with a clear commitment to public service and an extensive legal career. Adair previously oversaw all federal prosecutions in the state as the United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina, and her distinguished career includes work as a Department of Justice trial attorney and law clerk to U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel.

Her candidacy for Congress, her time as Executive Director of Charleston Legal Access, and her current service as a full-time law professor at the University of South Carolina’s Joseph F. Rice School of Law showcases her tenacity for serving her community. She serves on both the Civil Rights Section and the Diversity Committee of the South Carolina Bar.

Katelyn N. Brewer

Founder & Principal, KNB Solutions Group

Charleston

Based in North Charleston, Katelyn Brewer is a staunch advocate for inclusion in business spaces. As the founder and principal of KNB Solutions Group, a boutique, woman-owned marketing and organizational consulting firm, Katelyn has ensured that others can invest in their dream without giving up their financial stability.

Katelyn fights for members of the LGBTQ+ community and is a frequent speaker on inclusive leadership. Rooted in empathy and efficiency, she helps people in her community unlock their full potential within existing institutions.

Paul Cain

Attorney, Cain Law Firm; Owner & General Counsel, Magnetic South Brewery

Seneca

A graduate of the Charleston School of Law, Paul Cain has made his impact in South Carolina’s Upstate, including becoming the first Fellow from his county. Bringing a unique regional perspective to this class, Paul will offer insight as a former Oconee County Council member, the youngest President of the South Carolina Association of Counties, managing member at the Cain Law Firm and owner of Magnetic South Brewery in Anderson.

His career has been marked by the belief that his purpose is to help others reach their full potential. In his work as an attorney and a public servant, he desires for people to know themselves well, discover what they’re passionate about and chase after that goal.

Jennifer Capell

VP Finance, Corporate Controller at BlueCross BlueShield SC

Lexington County

Growing up in the Upstate of South Carolina and spending much of her career in the Midlands, Jennifer Capell had a broad understanding of the state’s corporate landscape. She serves as a corporate controller for the largest health insurer in the state, BlueCross BlueShield of SC, and has a deep commitment to community wellness.

After graduating from Clemson University, she made her way to Columbia, South Carolina where she serves on the board of The Nickelodeon, a non-profit arthouse theater that brings movies and arts experiences to Columbia’s Main Street. She also gives back to her alma mater through her service on the Board of Visitors for the University.

Tushar V. Chikhliker

Shareholder, Economic Development Practice Group Leader, Maynard Nexsen PC

Columbia

Raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Tushar V. Chikhliker is a first-generation American whose career has been spent mentoring the next generation of business and legal professionals through his work as a Shareholder and Economic Development Practice Group Leader at Maynard Nexsen PC in Columbia. He serves as an economic development legal advisor and strategist, helping bring investment and job creation to the state he is proud to call home.

Chikhliker is no stranger to personal adversity, recently surviving an advanced stage blood cancer diagnosis. Despite challenges like this, with the support of his family and countless others, he has pushed himself towards success even in the face of hardship. Last year, he was named to The Best Lawyers in America list.

Dr. Shaniece Criss

Director of the Advocacy and Social Policy Master’s Program and Associate Professor of Health Sciences, Furman University
Council Member, City of Travelers Rest

Greenville

As a City Councilmember in Travelers Rest and a public health scholar at Furman University, Dr. Shaniece Criss brings insight and leadership to her community. She serves as the Director of the Advocacy and Social Policy Master’s Program and Associate Professor in the Health Sciences Department, where her research and teaching focus on the systems and social conditions that shape community well-being and opportunity. She is also the host of Civically Grown, a podcast where changemakers share the roots and impact of their leadership.

Through her public service, Shaniece founded the Youth Council Academy, a program designed to help students better understand and engage with local government. She brings her knowledge and energy to several boards in the Upstate, including Prisma Health and the Community Foundation of Greenville, and previously held board roles with South Carolina Hospital Association, Public Education Partners, and Greenville Women Giving. Shaniece works to help communities grow stronger and more connected through research, civic engagement, and collaborative partnerships.

Sara Hazzard

President and CEO, South Carolina Manufacturers and Commerce

Columbia

Based in Columbia, South Carolina, Sara Hazzard has a unique ability to connect others. In her role as the President and CEO of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, Sara was responsible for helping guide a collaborative merger between the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance and the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, forming South Carolina Manufacturers and Commerce. Though no small feat, Sara used her leadership expertise to make alignment possible.

Her leadership has bolstered the state’s economic standing and industrial innovation all while South Carolina is at the forefront of population growth and industry shifts.

Allison King

Partner, Tiber Hudson LLC

Charleston

Allison R. King has built her career on the conviction that stable housing is the bedrock of a healthy community. As a partner at Tiber Hudson, she leads the firm’s Charleston office while maintaining a national practice, leveraging innovative financing to secure homes for more than 88,000 families across the country. Her impact on the Palmetto State is defined by this expertise paired with a steadfast focus on expanding local civic infrastructure.

With over two decades of experience in real estate development and law, Allison specializes in navigating the complex systems that make affordable housing a reality. Her leadership extends civically as the founding president of the South Carolina Women’s Affordable Housing Network and as a member of the steering committee for the South Carolina Housing – Affordable Housing Summit. Through her extensive community involvement and as a founding board member of Rocky’s House, she focuses on creating sustainable, large-scale impact for residents throughout the region.

Steve Miano

Investigations & Law Enforcement Development Manager, Africa & Europe

Summerville

With a deep commitment to protecting the most vulnerable populations around the world, Steve Miano leverages his Aiken County law enforcement experience in his role as the Africa & Europe Investigations and Law Enforcement Development Manager for International Justice Mission, a global organization working to protect people in poverty from violence, including human trafficking and abuse against women and children.

Based in Summerville, South Carolina, Steve leads initiatives focused on protecting children and vulnerable communities while advancing IJM’s mission to bring rescue, restoration, and lasting justice.

Ashley K. Nelson

Executive Director, Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation

Charleston

Ashley K. Nelson is a community-centered leader whose work is rooted in service, connection, and creating opportunities for others. From her early leadership experiences serving on Winthrop University’s Council of Student Leaders to her professional career, Ashley has consistently focused on making a meaningful impact in the communities she serves.

After spending seven years with Verizon, Ashley’s journey brought her to Pawleys Island, South Carolina, where she has now spent more than a decade serving at the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation. Through her work in philanthropy, she helps lead efforts focused on improving the lives of Georgetown County residents and strengthening the long-term future of the community.

Ashley’s commitment to civic leadership extends far beyond her professional role. She actively volunteers with organizations and schools throughout Georgetown County and serves on the HGTC Foundation Board as well as the Coastal Carolina University Spadoni College Board of Visitors. Whether she is supporting education initiatives, investing in youth leadership, or helping convene conversations around community impact, Ashley is passionate about bringing people together to create lasting change.

Michael W. Nix, CFA

Chief Investment Officer, Verity Investment Partners

Based in Bluffton, South Carolina, Michael brings deep financial expertise, strong analytical skills, and a strategic mindset to his leadership roles. He serves as Chief Investment Officer at Verity Investment Partners and sits on several statewide boards, including the South Carolina Jobs-Economic Development Authority (JEDA), the South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development, the Palmetto State Growth Fund, and InvestSC.

A graduate of The Citadel, Michael brings discipline and a pragmatic approach to everything he does. He is passionate about strengthening communities through equitable economic development, investment, technical assistance, and financial literacy.

Dr. Otis Westbrook Pickett, Sr.

University Historian, Chief Administrator of Historic Properties and Assistant Professor of History, Clemson University

Charleston

As a native of Charleston, South Carolina, Otis W. Pickett has a deep appreciation and understanding of how history shapes our future. As the University Historian for Clemson University, Otis is the chief administrator of historic properties and plays a pivotal role in preserving the institution’s rich heritage and disseminating history to the broader public.

His research and expertise have helped students and community members better understand history and how it continues to shape the lives of South Carolinians. In October 2025, Otis published a book with USC Press about the role that theology and ecclesiology played in shaping interracial interaction both within the nineteenth century Presbyterian Church and southern society broadly.

Otis is attempting to try and elevate the lives of every South Carolinian by bringing history to events across the state in places like Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, Aiken, Florence and everywhere in-between that will have him. His “history on the road” initiatives are reaching South Carolinians through his service at Clemson and also through his service on the board of the South Carolina Humanities Council. He is also part of a group at Clemson attempting to create a higher education in prison initiative so that all South Carolinians have the dignity and opportunity to receive continuing education no matter their status.

Aaron Polkey

President & CEO, Palmetto Project

As a fourth-generation peninsular Charlestonian who is proud of his Gullah Geechee heritage, Aaron Polkey has been recognized as an inspirational leader, gifted communicator, and tireless advocate for historically marginalized individuals and communities.

As President and CEO of the Palmetto Project, Aaron focuses on catalytic public-private partnerships — working across both the business sector, in his role as CEO, and government, in his position as a city council member in Charleston. 

Through his leadership, Aaron addresses systemic challenges and works to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians.

Derrick L. Quarles

Founder and Principal Consultant, NextWave Consulting Group

Greenville

Derrick Quarles, of Greenville, South Carolina, is a public policy leader, educator, and organizational strategist with experience across government, higher education, civic engagement, and nonprofit leadership. A graduate of Claflin University and Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education Administration at Jackson State University, Derrick’s leadership has been shaped by the legacy and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Derrick has worked in more than 35 states supporting campaigns, organizations, and communities through strategic planning, coalition building, and civic engagement. He is also the Founder and Principal Consultant of NextWave Consulting Group, a public policy and strategy consulting firm focused on community-centered solutions. Derrick currently serves as a mentor with the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Thomas E. Kerns Elementary School and previously served as a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.

Saria Saccocio

Chief Medical Officer, Essence Healthcare

Based in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, Saria Saccocio is a family physician who leads teams committed to transforming primary care delivery. As Chief Medical Officer at Essence Healthcare, she brings extensive healthcare leadership experience to advancing patient-centered solutions.

With degrees from the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Saria applies her expertise not only in her role, but also in her service to boards such as the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians and the United Way of Greenville County.

Marion Hinson Smith III “Rion”

Retired, Board Chair Prisma Health Upstate Foundation

An outdoorsman in Greenville, South Carolina, Marion “Rion” Smith is the CEO of Outdoor Sports Marketing. With nearly three decades of industry experience, he creates engaging marketing campaigns that connect nature enthusiasts with quality outdoor products. Rion’s dedication to the outdoors extends beyond his day job. He is highly passionate about preserving the natural environment and promoting conservation in South Carolina. His career has been marked by a blend of business acumen and deep care for outdoor recreation.

Rion is an avid outdoors person and he sold his ownership shares of Outdoor Sports Marketing, in April of 2025, after purchasing the company in 1999 and running it successfully for 25 years.

Rion has served locally on the Friends of the Reedy River and Triune Mercy Center boards. He is currently the board chair of Prisma Health Upstate Foundation and serve in a support and advisory position with the Parish House Community Development Corporation.

Rion enjoys riding bikes, running, hiking, swimming, traveling for perspective, enjoying time with family.

The public leadership cohort consists of South Carolina residents, aged 35 to 55, who were selected from 503 interested applicants.

The Class of 2027 will begin their Liberty Fellowship experience with a series of five, multi-day seminars in South Carolina and abroad in March 2027. Each Class member will also be required to create an impact venture that establishes positive change for future generations in South Carolina.

Upon successful completion of the initial program, the Class of 2027 will join over 350 leaders in the Liberty Fellowship South Carolina Network and 3,000 leaders in the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Through these two networks, they will have lifelong opportunities for engagement and access to an influential group of colleagues and mentors.
